What songs should ‘Idol’ ban?
Entertainment Weekly has released a list of “12 Songs That Should Be Banned Forever!” on American Idol. For the most part, I agree with the list.
The idea of banning songs on the show — the overplayed, the ones that are too tied to a previous contestant and the ones that just don’t fit the format — seems like a great idea. Unfortunately, it’s probably not one that will happen.
And, no doubt, when the series premieres next week, this season’s contestants will make the tragic mistakes of those before them. Someone, without question, will audition using a Kelly Clarkson tune. Or someone will overdo it with the Whitney Houston. Or Mariah Carey. Or Stevie Wonder.
In my opinion, the entire libraries of Whitney, Mariah and Stevie should be erased from the songbooks. These are artists who just can’t be repeated. Past contestants who have found success singing songs by these superstar artists have already done it. So, there’s no need to repeat that, again.
The first song on EW’s list to ban is Heart’s Alone, which made Carrie Underwood an instant hit — the big, blonde hair could have helped, too. I must agree this song cannot be done better by any contestant this season or any one since Underwood’s dynamic performance, which likely locked in her spot for the crown.
Honestly, there are dozens and dozens of songs I’d like to ban from the show. But it also wouldn’t be very interesting to watch a season of unknown songs being sung by unknown (at least for now) singers.
So, what songs would you ban?
