The Taylor Hicks interview
Just as he was doing before “American Idol” made him a pop culture icon, Taylor Hicks is as busy as ever touring and making music.
The Season 5 “Idol” winner took time from his busy schedule to chat with me on the phone earlier this week. You could almost hear the exhaustion in his voice.
He released his book, “Heart Full of Soul,” earlier this year, and his concert schedule has taken him to just about every corner of the United States since he released his major label debut at the end of 2006.
“It is important to stay working as a musician,” he said. “If you’re not working, you’re not getting paid. You can say that for anybody.”
Taylor said his fans — who now range from quite young to quite old — can expect a new CD out sometime next year. He said he’s been working on some new music, and he’s excited to get it out there.
And, while he certainly is appreciative of his time on “Idol,” as with many contestants, Taylor is hoping his music can stand on its own. That doesn’t mean he has forgotten about the experience that launched his career on a much more national level.
“We talk every now and then, some of us,” Taylor said of his fellow contestants and those he worked with on “Idol.” “It’s always nice to go back on the show and say hello to everybody.”
