The military factor
I’ve mentioned before I think this season of “American Idol” is going to rely heavily on the military factor. In other words, if you show up at the auditions in a military uniform — Army, Navy, Marines, it doesn’t matter — you’ll be ahead of the curve.
Want further proof? Tonight’s auditions are in Memphis, Tenn., where at least one military contestant has made news in Norman, Okla.
The Norman Transcript reports that tonight’s episode will feature former Norman resident Phil Stacey of the U.S. Navy. The reason the newspaper is reporting on Stacey’s audition is because he left his pregnant-and-almost-due wife, Kendra, to audition for the show.
Even though “Idol” moved up Stacey’s audition time to help him catch an early flight home, it still was too late. Stacey’s second daughter, McKayla, was born before he made it home.
So, there’s a good story for a future “Idol,” right? We’ll see about that. If the auditions in Memphis are anything like Minneapolis or Seattle, well, I’m not sure anything will help. That is, except for the military factor. Remember, you heard it here first.
