Review: Jennifer Hudson glows in ‘Sex’

Jennifer Hudson and Sarah Jessica Parker walk the pink carpet at the Sex and the City premiere in New York City.
My Friday night was spent at the theater, cashing in on the hype that has been leading up to the premiere of Sex and the City. Of course, I was excited to see all my favorite Sex alums, but I also have been quite anxious to see how Jennifer Hudson would meld with the cast as Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant, Louise.
As you would expect, the Oscar-winning American Idol alum fit perfectly into the high-fashion role, complete with sass and her own Louis Vuitton. And, while it may not have been another Oscar-worthy performance, Jennifer Hudson continued to prove she’s a multi-talented actress.
While playing Dreamgirls’ Effie White was a much more demanding role, Louise is more of a relatable character. She’s young. She’s looking for love in the Big Apple. And she just wants to get the most from life. Louise is a refreshing new look at who Carrie Bradshaw once wanted to be.
Hudson’s take on Louise is equally refreshing. While it’s not a huge role — she only ever interacts with Carrie — it’s one that has its own interesting sub-story. Louise’s journey runs parallel, though at a different rate, from Sex’s leading lady.
Any Hudson fans who see this performance certainly will be pleased. I was.
