No song to sing
Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this. Or that’s what Kelly Clarkson said as confetti fell from above and tears of joy fell from her eyes during the Season 1 finale.
Then, last year, Taylor Hicks asked, “Do I Make You Proud?” And, well, the answer kind of turned out to be a big fat “no.” At the end of every “Idol” season, we’ve been introduced to a new song (or two new songs in the last few seasons) that turn out to be recorded as the winner’s first single.
Producers hope these songs will be a big hit. And, maybe with the exception of “A Moment Like This,” it usually doesn’t stand out for long, even if sales seem to indicate otherwise. Any play these singles get likely is because it’s the only thing the in-demand winners have to offer radio stations and fans at the time.
Executives had talked this year about a songwriting competition, which would give anyone a chance to write the winner’s first single. The finalists would have their songs represented on a Web site, and a voting system would allow America to choose the winning song for the winning singer.
But, there hasn’t been word of the songwriting competition yet. And it seems there won’t be talk of the competition now. Producers and executives have canceled the songwriting portion of the show, giving no real details. Of course, there were few details about this portion of the contest in the beginning.
Now that Ryan Seacrest has been busy trying to talk every fan in America to get on board for “Idol Gives Back,” it seems the show is more focused on being a charity standout instead of being a place for aspiring songwriters to get a start on their career.
It’s not the first time the show has been a disappointment this season.
