Live blogging: ‘American Idol’ Top 10 become 9

by Reed Dunn

If I had to say right now, Ramiele Malubay may be saying “goodbye” tonight on American Idol. But who knows? We’re about to find out at the end of the hour … so, let’s get to it.

8:06 p.m.

It’s time for the results. First up is Chikezie Eze. He’s in the bottom three, which is no big surprise.

Now for Brooke White. And she’s safe. As is Carly Smithson. No real surprises here …

8:22 p.m.

David Archuleta, who had a tough night last night is up. He, too, is safe. As is the other David, David Cook.

Now, it’s Syesha Mercado’s turn. She didn’t have the strongest night, and she joins Chikezie in this week’s bottom three.

So, what about Michael Johns? Not too surprising (though a little disappointing to me), he’s safe.

8:29 p.m.

And we’re back. Tonight’s questions from America include wanting to know if Chikezie is single (yes) and why David Archuleta chose the song he did this week. (”I just love it.”)

Now, it’s the moment I’ve been waiting for since I found out she was going to be back on the show. Bring on Kimberley Locke! She’s been busy losing weight, opening a restaurant and, of course, recording music.

Tonight on the Idol stage, she is wearing a special dress made by Project Runway winner Christian Siriano.

As always, Kimberley looks quite comfortable in her element. Her rendition of Fall, from the CD Based on a True Story, is even more incredible than it is on the album.

8:43 p.m.

There’s one spot left in the bottom three, and I’m still betting it’s going to be filled by Ramiele Malubay — it should be, at least. But I’m not the only one who votes, so let’s see …

We’re about to find out. Because it’s Ramiele’s turn, which probably means she’ll be safe. Her rendition of Alone last night was weak, even though she was sick. But she’s safe.

That means it’s down to Jason Castro and Kristy Lee Cook. It will be no huge surprise if Kristy ends up in the final three … and welcome to that big surprise I suggested last night. Jason joins Syesha and Chikezie to round out the bottom three.

Jason isn’t spending much time in the bottom three. Ryan quickly sends him back to the safety, which also is no huge surprise. So, why did he end up there, anyway? As I said last night, some fans are going to be power voters for those contestants they feel are in danger — people like Ramiele — and they’re not going to remember to vote for those other contestants they like … Jason, for example.

8:54 p.m.

Chikezie Eze was eliminated tonight from the American Idol Top 10.

Here we are, again. It’s down to Chikezie and Syesha, and the Top 10 is about to become the Top 9. After the judges squabble a little bit … the contestant going home tonight is … Chikezie. His time to leave was weeks ago, but he was starting to make a decent comeback.

At least as far as these two contestants are concerned, America definitely got it right. But that’s just my opinion. What about you?

I’m Filipino but I’m not supporting Ramiele just because of race. But I’m rooting for Ramiele bec. I think she’s really good except that she’s not taking this seriously as compared to Carly Smithson. Carly wants this so baddd it just hurts- and makes her appear like she’s trying too hard which shows. Tonight’s results is really all about fan base- awful Kristy Lee Cook should have gone home a long time ago, but again, she worked that patriotic song card the way she worked her Amazing Grace card during Hollywood week to save her one-trick ass.

  2. Sarah Says:

I can not freaking STAND Romulus or whatever the hell her name is. I’m sorta sad that Chikezie was sent home but I know why. If he had learned to rock it out a bit more, he might have stayed longer. I like Kristy Lee, but mostly only because she’s my ticket to winning the Idol pool. I like Syesha’s voice but don’t think she’ll go much farther.

It is my opinion that Kristy Lee Cook has overstayed her welcome since it came down to her and the other pretty blond girl about 6 weeks ago. I’m not critisizing her I think she has a nice voice, but its not powerful at all and she puts out boring performances. The problem with AI is that you have someone like Kristy who makes it by the skin of her teeth all the time then she has her first decent performance and compared to her others its phenominal and the judges will give her credit for being great, because her other performances were so weak. Then you got someone like Carly Smithson who is the best of the bunch out of the women, who has an off night for her which is still way better than Kristy Lee Cook and the judges tear her appart, and I dont think its fair how they evaluate that way because I think america leans on the judges opinions more at the end than the beginning.

What I wanna know is why was Syesha in the bottom three?? She is by far a much better singer then most of the top 10 women & men (case in point Taylor Hicks..WTF?. And this last performance was flawless..the girl can sing. She sings circles around Ramiel, Kristy & Brook (yes, Brook..) Face it, according to America, if you’re a black female singer, you have to sing 20x better than everyone else to get noticed..the standard is lower for non-ethnic women and men in general. I mean come on, we all really know that as cute as she is, poor Kristy is just an ok singer…Ramiel is good but not great - she sounds inexperienced and amateurish, and Brook, though she does her own thing quite well, sings all her songs the same way (..a la Jason!)and has a range of about 10 notes. Poor Syesha sang brilliantly (even Randy, who has worked with the best, thought so) but was written off by America…not even noticed… even the review above states: ” She didn’t have the strongest night..”. Were we watching the same show?? I guarantee you if it was a white girl up there sounding like Syesha, she’d be America’s Sweetheart & the next AI. I guess America has enough Whitneys,Pattis & Arethas. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Syesha should win the whole thing but she should not have been in the bottom three. I personally feel that along with Syesha the best singers are Carly, the two Davids, and possibly Michael & Brook (see, I do like her). All the rest really don’t have the chops. Ya feel me??

  5. paul Says:

Me again… I goofed..I copied & pasted the following text:(case in point..Taylor Hicks WTF!!)in the wrong place. Should been next to: “…the standard is lower for non-ethnic women and men in general..” Get it? It shoulda read:
“..the standard is lower for non-ethnic women and men in general(case in point..Taylor Hicks WTF!!)…”
    Sorry about that..I guess I didn’t proofread..lol

  6. Arman Valdar Says:

Chikezie, I felt, should have been gone long before–that is just my opinion. It seems that others now agree. Syesha, I am unsure about her but believe that Carly is one of the most talented. But I do know that talent and beauty is a dangerous combination and Kristy Lee has both in abundance, but because of her beauty, she has become the one to hate. I guess she is just too much the girl-next-door type or reminds people of Underwood. The judges never give her credit and the blogs love to pick on her. Hopefully, as last night, her amazing talent will begin keep her here much longer and let her many fans enjoy her ability for many weeks to come. Michael J. will begin to appear in the bottom list from this point forward.

  7. Audrey Says:

Love the song Chikezie sang Only for 1 night, who is the orginal artist?.
Bit sorry to him gone was a big fan

  8. nate Says:

whoever you are paul, you are the reason why racism in america still exists, noone looks at race when it comes to music, thats why music is so amazing. Its its own language, race, sex, everything. if its good, its good. stop pulling out your ‘everyones racist card’ everytime something not so great happens to a black person. thats ridiculous.

  9. paul Says:

Uhhh..Nate, no one looks at race when it comes to music?? What country you living in?? Yes, I guess I am the reason why racism in america still exists…mmhmmm, right. Wake up, man. All I did is make an observation based on my experiences..I’m entitled to that. No offense, but in my opinion it’s people like you that choose to ignore and refuse to discuss the issue that are the problem.
