‘Idol Gives Back’: Very nice, I like
Sacha Baron Cohen will revive his “Borat” character for an “Idol” charity event.
Maybe it was the mid-season surprise. Hopefully not.
But “American Idol” is doing a good thing by using its popularity for good. As you probably heard, the show will be raising money next month to benefit the poor children in Africa and the areas of Louisiana and Mississippi that were destroyed by hurricanes Rita and Katrina.
The two-night charity drive will feature musicians Josh Groban, Annie Lennox, Pink and Gwen Stefani. Bono also is expected to be involved in some way or another. Oddly enough, though, Sacha Baron Cohen also will revive his “Borat” character to help the cause. I’m not sure how that fits the theme of the show, but I’m sure it will be interesting at the very least.
Here’s how it will work. Show sponsors Coca-Cola and AT&T will donate cash to the selected charities based on the number of votes cast during the April 24 and 25 episodes. There also will be a phone bank set up for fans of the show to call in and donate to the drive, which is being called “Idol Gives Back.”
With a summer camp, lottery tickets in states that give back to education and this event, it seems America’s favorite talent search is becoming an even bigger force than ever before.
