‘Idol’ contestant wants to be gay spokesperson

Kady Malloy says she wants to be a spokesperson for gay rights.
A recently booted American Idol Top 24 contestant wants to be a spokesperson for gay rights. And it’s probably not who you’re thinking.
Kady Malloy, who left the competition just short of making the Top 12 finals, is stepping up to the challenge. She says, “Well, my best friend is gay. Freddie Mercury was gay, who’s my idol. I just think that, you know, you shouldn’t define somebody by their sexuality, and I think that gay people not being able to get married and things like that is just like history repeating itself, and I think that we need to learn from our past.”
In a season where gay has been one of the biggest buzz words on the show, it’s no surprise such a revelation would be made. Of course, that revelation may have been expected for a contestant of the opposite gender (based on recent rumors and other news events).
Speaking of the influence of sexuality on American Idol, former contestant and openly gay singer-turned-actor Jim Verraros told the Associated Press recently, “It feels like we’re closer now than ever to having an openly gay contestant on the show.”
“I’m not here to name any names, but I feel like there are some definite possibilities for this to happen this year,” said Verraros, who came out publicly after his Season 1 run on the show. “Do I think it’ll happen? I don’t know. I hope it does.”
