‘Idol’ alums team up for ‘Joseph’ musical

Monday, July 13th, 2009

anthony_dianaThey may not have worked together during their respective runs on American Idol, but Anthony Federov and Diana DeGarmo will be joining forces for a Broadway favorite later this month.

Federov, a finalist during Season 4 of Idol, will play the lead role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat during the July 21-25 run with the Lyric Theatre in Oklahoma City. DeGarmo, runner-up on Idol’s third season, will play Narrator.

DeGarmo has had extensive Broadway experience, including a run in Hairspray, since her exit from Idol. Her character has been played by another Idol alum, Amy Adams, who took the show on the road for a national tour a couple of years ago.

Joseph is one of Broadway veteran Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most favored musicals. It tells the story of the title character’s life standing out among 10 other brothers. He is betrayed by his family and taken far from his native Egypt after being sold into slavery. Joseph doesn’t give up on his life and dreams, and the musical follows his story to triumph.

Adam Lambert sings his version of Crazy by Gnarls Barkley

American Idol stopped through San Francisco, and only a handful of singers were handed the much-desired golden ticket.

One of those 10 contestants was Broadway singer Adam Lambert. He’s the unlikely Idol favorite — a little too theatrical for what the show usually likes — but all four judges gave Adam a “yes” vote. Even Simon, the hater of all things theater.

Adam, who starred in the hit show Wicked for its Los Angeles run, may stand a shot at making Idol history by doing Broadway before the show. Sure there may be other singers with better voices, but I do feel he’s the best to come from San Francisco. I’m a sucker for this kind of performance, so I definitely think he could be one of my favorites this season.

Adam certainly wins my praise over contestants like Bikini Girl … is anyone with me on this one?

Ruben & Frenchie to be Misbehavin’

Touring theater company Big League Productions announced plans for a 30th anniversary tour of the Tony Award-winning Ain’t Misbehavin’. And American Idol likely is going to be represented on the tour bus via Ruben Studdard and Frenchie Davis.

Studdard won Season 2 of Idol and Davis, who was dismissed from the show after admitting to taking racy photos, starred in Rent on Broadway.

The national tour will be in 2008 and 2009, according to the Big League Web site. Specific dates have yet to be announced. Ain’t Misbehavin’ first was produced on Broadway in 1978 and featured the late Nell Carter. The show won Tony awards for Best Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical and Best Direction of a Musical.

Studdard has struggled to find huge success post-Idol, but the singer has released four CDs — Soulful, Flying Without Wings, I Need an Angel and The Return. A fifth release is expected sometime in 2008.

Aside from Rent, Davis also has performed in Mahalia — A Gospel Musical, Little Shop of Horrors and Jesus Christ Superstar. The singer also played Effie White (the role that made Jennifer Hudson an Oscar winner) in the touring production of Dreamgirls.
