Carly Smithson: The new one to watch

by Reed Dunn

If you missed last night’s episode of American Idol, featuring San Diego auditions, you missed the best contestant to enter the competition this season — Carly Smithson.

The 23-year-old actually made it to Hollywood after auditioning in Season 5, but was disqualified the next day after finding out her U.S. citizenship paperwork wasn’t completed. But she’s back. And that’s a good thing.

After six successful seasons, I have to admit I was a little worried about the show being able to pick through all the people just wanting a little TV time and those handful of true, genuine performers. If Carly Smithson doesn’t go far in this competition, it will be a disappointment.

Watch the video, and you’ll see what I mean. She actually sang a Whitney Houston song. And did it justice. This never happens.

Clearly, you know my favorite contestant at this point. What about you? Who’s standing out in the crowd?
